CIBER Success Stories
Summer Institute Program for Business Communication in Language from the University of Pennsylvania
Recognizing a national need for foreign language educators with both foreign language skills and a knowledge of business, the Penn Lauder CIBER with the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education offered an extremely innovative and highly engaging 30-hour intensive business language program. The program was comprised of ten hours of instruction in the four major functional areas of business, then hours of second-language acquisition and methodology issues, and ten hours of hands-on curriculum design for application of the theoretical framework provided in the course.
Along with the wonderful instruction, the Summer Institute richness was enhanced by a truly unique group of participants. In addition to ESL, nine languages were represented: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. The participants represented academic institutions all the way from elementary school to graduate school and both private and public institutions. Because of the uniqueness of the group, discussions were very lively and stimulating. Class projects were not only inspiring but made available so that all participants could easily adopt them to their individual classroom needs.
The Penn Lauder CIBER plans to continue offering the Summer Institute. I cannot recommend it highly enough. We foreign language instructions in Philadelphia and the surrounding vicinity are extremely fortunate to have such a dynamic organization as Penn Lauder CIBER nearby to us.
