With this year's theme, we turn our attention to the variety of approaches employed in studying the processes and contexts of SLA. Researchers draw on theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, cognitive science, psychology, educational science, and other disciplines. They gather and analyze data through laboratory research, classroom observations, case studies, ethnographies, and language corpora. They quantify and they interpret. At times it appears that these researchers are looking at completely different subject areas, but all identify themselves as working within the field of SLA.
SLRF 2009 asks how these varied methodologies and approaches compose a single "field of SLA". We solicit papers, posters, and colloquia that address this question and that add to our understanding of SLA. Location:

This workshop is designed to equip international business educators with an in-depth understanding of how institutions shape the strategies that firms employ and the actions that managers take in developing and emerging countries. We will explore how weak institutions create particular challenges, such as corruption, political risk, regulatory obstacles, social divisions, and civil strife—and the ways firms and managers can cope with these issues. We also will examine how non-governmental organizations (NGOs), social entrepreneurs, diaspora communities, and multilateral organizations are striving to strengthen institutions in these markets and how these new institutional forms affect firms and managers. Participants will learn about the institutional realities practitioners and policymakers currently are facing in these countries and the latest scholarly research findings in this area. They also will acquire hands-on experience with various teaching materials, including cases, videos, and in-class and internet exercises, that will help participants better prepare their students for success in developing and emerging markets. The IBC works with H.S. language and social sciences teachers to introduce international business concepts into their classes using an international case competition. As a prerequisite to participating in the competition, students must have taken four years of a foreign language. This program, now in its eighth year, includes operations and financial support from Bayer Corp. and the Cultural Communications Alliance. This year’s H.S. marketing competition will focused on developing a plan to sell daily vitamins in China. The project is introduced to schools each November; schools average 20-40 world language students who form teams of up to six members. In March of each year, the individual schools have in-house competitions to determine which team will move on to the Bayer Competition and compete against the other school districts. Bayer sends employees to act as mentors to the students in each school district and each school has one or two teachers who guide the students and organize the intra-school competition. The final inter-scholastic is hosted by the IBC, CBA, and several Pitt faculty members who serve as judges and consultants. Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Zen , The inspiring true story of legendary Zen Master Dogen is brought to vivid life on the screen, more than 750 years after he lived his extraordinary life.
February 26, 2009
- University of Washington
[Details]
To cast away everything, surrendering yourself to the flow of nature and just sitting in meditation… This is the essence of Dogen’s Zen Buddhism. In the 13th century, Dogen, a young Japanese monk traveled to China, determined to find his true master. There he found a monk who taught him that sitting in Zen meditation is the true and only path to enlightenment. Returning, enlightened, to Japan, Dogen risked his life to pioneer Zen Buddhism, inspiring the millions of Zen Buddhists who practice around the world today.
Making his film debut in an astonishingly authentic performance of Dogen is Nakamura Kantaro, the 19th generation Kabuki actor and son of Kabuki legend, Nakamura Kanzaburo. In Kantaro’s incarnation, Dogen’s calm presence exudes a commanding authority, born of his unshakable faith and dedication to his cause. Surrounded by veteran actors, Kantaro and his supporting cast bring the 13th century vividly back to life. Veteran director Takahashi Banmei has written and directed a riveting, gorgeous drama of faith and power.

Simon Schwartzman, Ph.D.,
Insituto de Estudos do Trabalho e,
Sociedade in Rio de Janeiro, will speak on the present state of education in Brazil.
Brazilian education expanded in the 1990s, and today most children are able
to get to school and remain there for several years. Illiteracy is also falling, and
is mostly restricted now to the poorer and older population. However, a large
number of youngsters leave school at ages 13-15, secondary education has
stagnated, and the quality of basic education, as measured by national and
international assessments such as PISA, is very low, and many students
remain functionally illiterate in spite of years of schooling. Several policies
have been tried in the last years to deal with this situation, but none seems
to be working. In the presentation, some of these policies will be
discussed, and some better approaches will be suggested.

When most people think of Peru, the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu often comes to mind. Since its “rediscovery” by Yale archeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911, this pre-Columbian ruin has become synonymous with Peru. Few countries are similarly encapsulated within a single image to such a degree.
While the mysteriousness of ancient civilizations will forever intrigue visitors, Peru’s connections to the past overshadow the significant interest generated by the country’s recent economic progress. This diverse nation of 28 million people has quietly positioned itself as the hidden commercial gem of Latin America—a diverse, export-driven economy characterized by open markets and fiscal prudence. This conference examines the poetry & philosophy of Rumi, the 13th-century Muslim poet, philosopher, & mystic, & its relevance to contemporary understandings of Islamic culture. It also deals with renewed interests in Rumi's writings in recent years throughout the Middle East, Europe, & the United States. The starting point of the conference is Rumi's well-known verse "come, come again, whoever you are, come!" Rumi's eloquent & humanistic poetry, written sometimes with a sense of humor, creates a window on Islamic beliefs, values, & wisdom that is far removed from images of violence & terrorism. Bringing well-known scholars of Islamic mysticism, Rumi, & the Middle East together, we explore Rumi's writings, their place in Islamic literature & society, & their resurgence as bestsellers in the West. The universality of Rumi's poetry fosters an understanding of the human experience that transcends the boundaries of nations, religions, & languages. Location: Parlour Room, MSU Student Union

"Modularity, Transactions, and the Boundaries of Firms: A Synthesis"
This paper constructs a unified theory of the location of transactions and the boundaries
of firms. It proposes that systems of production can be viewed as networks of tasks. Transactions,
defined as mutually agreed-upon transfers with compensation, are located within the task
network and serve to separate one set of tasks from another. Placing a transaction in a particular
location in turn requires work to define, count (or measure), and pay for the transacted objects.
The costs of this work (labeled mundane transaction costs) are generally low at module
boundaries and high in their interiors. Location: Ross Business School
India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with a GDP growth rate of 9.2% at the end of the second quarter of 2006-2007. U.S. Exports to India in 2006 surpassed $ 10 billion, a 25 percent increase over 2005.
Sweeping reforms that commenced in 1991 have included the privatization or deregulation of most industries in the public sector and liberalization of foreign trade through a steady reduction in tariffs. These measures have had far-reaching consequences and today, India has a strong, vibrant, and fast-growing economy, which is rapidly integrating with the global economy. India is fast becoming one of the most important development centers for software, IT outsourcing, R&D, biotech, call centers, engineering and design, and other knowledge-based products and services. At the same time, India's rapidly expanding middle class represents a promising new market for consumer products. This conference examines voluntary governance across issue areas from the perspective of club theory and will focus on institutional design issues and the impact of program design on program efficacy. There is a strong and growing interest in voluntary programs among scholars, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and governments. With so many programs, in so many industries, with so many sponsors, there is significant diversity in the structure, scope, and efficacy of such programs. Voluntary program scholars are challenged to structure their research agenda around critical issues and to offer practitioners practical guidance for establishing effective programs. Several excellent studies have examined how voluntary programs are established, function and are diffused, and affect participants' social and economic performance. From this multi-disciplinary literature emerge several important program-specific lessons about what drives program membership and efficacy. This conference will pull this research together around key concepts with an objective of clearly communicating to scholars and practitioners what experts know about designing effective programs. The Indian economy is today the second fastest growing major economy in the world with a growth rate of 9.2 % at the end of the second quarter of 2006-2007. When measured in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), the Indian economy is the third largest in the world with a gross domestic product (GDP) of US $3.666 trillion. When measured in US $ exchange rate terms, it is the twelfth largest in the world with a GDP of US $719.8 billion (2005).
How has a country that was an abject colonial economy less than 60 years ago achieved its current global muscle? How might we renew an understanding of India's development from its five-thousand year history to its recent interventions in the world stage? And, perhaps most importantly, what role do India's "products"-such as business, science, technology, and politics, but also film, literature, music, architecture, philosophy, religion -play in fabricating the country's new global presence? Has India really changed from a nation of bullock carts, or have its purveyors masterfully refashioned its perception on the global stage?

“Señora, boys just cannot speak Spanish”: Deconstructing the notion of female superiority in foreign language classrooms
In this presentation, I take up the issue of the feminization of FL learning with a focus on students at a US university studying Spanish. While previous work has documented and questioned the prevalence of ideologies that posit females as superior FL learners and FL learning as a fundamentally “girlish” pursuit in secondary school settings (e.g. Carr & Pauwels, 2006; Schmenk, 2004; Sunderland, 2000a, 2000b, 2004), the present paper examines how these and other such ideologies of gender are constructed and negotiated in the course of doing FL learning in a college context.

The colloquium was founded eight years ago by the faculty of the University of Rhode Island's International Engineering Program with the support of a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (FIPSE). With significant growth in attendance each year and the enthusiastic encouragement of colleagues from many other institutions and both corporate and public sector support, a one-time event has now evolved into an annual conference. The topic of preparing young engineers to work across cultures and languages has become very timely in this age of globalization.
