The Globalization of Cleantech: The Fifth Annual Globalization of Services Conference
December 8, 2009  - University of Colorado at Denver   [Details]

Silicon Valley is increasingly invested in clean technologies and is already looked upon as a global leader in new technological development. As happens with most new technologies in their infancy, Silicon Valley's focus is currently on component manufacturing. However, a difference from earlier technology cycles is the upfront impact of globalization, especially the emergence of China and India as providers of skilled labor and large markets. Accordingly, the globalization of cleantech could follow some well-trodden paths and some new ones: As manufacturing gets modularized, firms such as Applied Materials might shift component work to East Asia. Some of this is already happening. System integration and other service provision might increasingly be provided by the large Indian system integrators. As of 2009, however, there is little evidence of this happening. Firms in Europe and East Asia have been investing in cleantech for some time now, and might participate in technological leadership. In each case, we are interested in exploring the time-frame and the driving forces. These will typically be outcomes of a mix of regulatory, domestic market and skills issues.

Japan Study Tour
March 13-28, 2010  - University of Washington   [Details]

The goal of this study tour is to provide a forum for students to learn about business issues of Japan and to gain an introductory understanding of Japanese business culture through company visits and cultural activities.

This study tour will focus on 3 main categories of Japanese business culture: innovation in products/services; innovation in people (leadership and management); and innovation in organizations.

Some questions this study tour seeks to answer are: How does a country that has embraced a seniority-based promotion system with lifetime employment change to a Western-style meritocracy? Would an individualistic business approach be more suitable to stimulate innovation and be the most beneficial to the Japanese economy? How might Japanese businesses adapt foreign ideals or business strategies to promote innovation and stimulate the Japanese economy?

Japanese businesses have strong relationships with many companies on the West Coast. Japan is WA State's 2nd largest trading partner. An introduction to Japanese customs and business practices will be directly applicable to students planning live and work in the Pacific Northwest.
