Poverty and Opportunity: Microfinance + People-Powered Development - University of Washington

In partnership with Seattle Microfinance and four UW campus partners, the UW CIBER organized a successful event series on microfinance at UW on 10/15/09. The series began with a first-ever microfinance Internship Open House that featured 14 Seattle-based organizations and attracted 130 undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines. UW CIBER invited faculty from business, global health, ICT, law and public affairs to roundtable discussion Rev. Terry Provance, Executive Director of Oikocredit USA. The events culminated in a public keynote presentation by Rev. Provance to a standing-room only audience of students, faculty, and community members. UW CIBER will post Rev. Provance’s keynote presentation on the GBC homepage.

The Globalization of Cleantech: The Fifth Annual Globalization of Services Conference - University of Colorado at Denver
Silicon Valley is increasingly invested in clean technologies and is already looked upon as a global leader in new technological development. As happens with most new technologies in their infancy, Silicon Valley's focus is currently on component manufacturing. However, a difference from earlier technology cycles is the upfront impact of globalization, especially the emergence of China and India as providers of skilled labor and large markets. Accordingly, the globalization of cleantech could follow some well-trodden paths and some new ones: As manufacturing gets modularized, firms such as Applied Materials might shift component work to East Asia. Some of this is already happening. System integration and other service provision might increasingly be provided by the large Indian system integrators. As of 2009, however, there is little evidence of this happening. Firms in Europe and East Asia have been investing in cleantech for some time now, and might participate in technological leadership. In each case, we are interested in exploring the time-frame and the driving forces. These will typically be outcomes of a mix of regulatory, domestic market and skills issues.

Puerto Rico Study Tour - University of Washington
We are looking forward to gaining a broad understanding of business concepts, growing industries and the role of multi-national corporations in Puerto Rico. A trip to two cities in Puerto Rico will allow UW graduate students to gain a rich appreciation of the diverse industries flourishing in Puerto Rico ranging from historically entrenched industries like agriculture to newer industries like high-tech manufacturing while learning how large MNCs impact business in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico's legal and political ties with the United States make it easier for American companies to set up and get to work on the island. English is taught in the school system, and most of the work force speaks English and Spanish. The currency is the dollar, and the U.S. Postal Service serves the island. Its 3.8 million residents are U.S. citizens. Puerto Rico is an interesting amalgam of Spanish and American cultures which impact business norms and competitive environments in unique ways.

About CIBERs

The Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBERs) were created under the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 to increase and promote the nation's capacity for international understanding and economic enterprise. Administered by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI, Part B of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the CIBER program links the manpower and information needs of U.S. business with the international education, language training, and research capacities of universities across the U.S. Thirty-one universities were designated as centers that serve as regional and national resources to business, students, and academics. Together, the CIBERs form a powerful network focused on improving American competitiveness and providing comprehensive service and programs that help U.S. business succeed in global markets.
