"As a junior consultant for the United Nations Development Programme Banda Aceh, I worked on the Aceh Partnerships for Economic Development (APED) project for three months in fall 2008. The funding provided by the business school was tremendously helpful in sponsoring my travel from Los Angeles to Jakarta. The UNDP contract did not cover international travel costs and the expenses would have been a serious financial burden. This has been an important opportunity for me to gain great insight in international development work. The project allowed me to study regional economic development policies and program implementation in Aceh. In addition, living and working in Banda Aceh has expanded my horizons in the work that I'd like to pursue. I believe a continual relationship with the UN will add to the caliber of USC and significantly benefit School of Policy, Planning and Development students interested in international work."

11th Annual IB Research Forum - Temple University
International business focuses on a group of firms that face distinctive decision making problems. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) control value chains that are disrupted by country-specific transport costs, government restrictions differences in tastes and production conditions. Such firms face two fundamental challenges. The first concerns controlling the costs that arise from the complexities of multinational activity. These include a diverse set of tasks such as managing the impact of exchange-rate variations, differences of national culture, customs and law, practices that constrain employee compensation, evaluation practices and so on. The second concerns creating value through leveraging their international networks to foster innovation and knowledge. This includes using their subsidiary networks, which serve as local extensions that tap into knowledge clusters, or develop into geographic centers of excellence. Thus, the subsidiary network can serve as a means of creating new technological, managerial and marketing competencies.

"Representing Slums Non-Magically: Chris Abani and Rohinton Mistry" - Temple University
This talk explores the question of genre or narrative mode with special attention to realism, which I read as a complex form. Anxious about the reception of literatures of Africa or South Asia as anthropological artifacts rather than works of the imagination, contemporary postcolonial literary studies has focused on the unsayable of text and celebrated anti-mimeticism. This is one reason that magical realist novels by Rushdie and Okri have done so well. Through readings of Graceland (2004) by Chris Abani and A Fine Balance (1995) by Rohinton Mistry, I seek to reclaim realist writing from the critical assumption that magical realism and novels with overtly symbolic content best represent the relation between human beings and the spaces of impoverishment they inhabit.
The Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBERs) were created under the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 to increase and promote the nation's capacity for international understanding and economic enterprise. Administered by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI, Part B of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the CIBER program links the manpower and information needs of U.S. business with the international education, language training, and research capacities of universities across the U.S. Thirty-one universities were designated as centers that serve as regional and national resources to business, students, and academics. Together, the CIBERs form a powerful network focused on improving American competitiveness and providing comprehensive service and programs that help U.S. business succeed in global markets.
