It also deals with renewed interests in Rumi's writings in recent years throughout the Middle East, Europe, & the United States. The starting point of the conference is Rumi's well-known verse "come, come again, whoever you are, come!" Rumi's eloquent & humanistic poetry, written sometimes with a sense of humor, creates a window on Islamic beliefs, values, & wisdom that is far removed from images of violence & terrorism. Bringing well-known scholars of Islamic mysticism, Rumi, & the Middle East together, we explore Rumi's writings, their place in Islamic literature & society, & their resurgence as bestsellers in the West. Nov 28, 2007 Language Learning in Study Abroad: Case Study of Americans in France - Temple University
Dr. Celeste Kinginger, Pennsylvania State University, presents research on language learning in study abroad frequently documents the significance or enhanced impact of individual differences in achievement; these differences are either left unexplained or ascribed to motivational deficits or other affective variables. The goal of this paper is to explore the value of explicit focus on the uniqueness of individual motives, experiences, and outcomes, following the poststructuralist realization that learning is a socially and historically situated human activity involving people who may accommodate or contest the practices they encounter. Three cases are selected from a larger research project involving 23 American undergraduate students on a semester-long sojourn in France. The project combines narrative study of interview and journal data with traditional assessment of growth in language proficiency and non-traditional assessment of developing language awareness. The cases demonstrate both that the contemporary study abroad sojourn is influenced by the forces of economic and political globalization, and that these experiences are highly diverse.

Administered by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI, Part B of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the CIBER program links the manpower and information needs of U.S. business with the international education, language training, and research capacities of universities across the U.S. Thirty-one universities were designated as centers that serve as regional and national resources to business, students, and academics. Together, the CIBERs form a powerful network focused on improving American competitiveness and providing comprehensive service and programs that help U.S. business succeed in global markets.
