Teams of four students will apply their analytical, decision-making and communication skills to present strategic solutions and recommendations to a panel of judges from the business community. Each team will be judged based on the content of its presentation as well as its ability to present arguments and recommendations to the judges. |
| Apr 4, 2008 - | Business Language Research and Teaching Awards (2nd Annual) A Consortium of Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) awarded grants to three researchers at U.S. universities, in order to facilitate research on the teaching of foreign language for business education. Three grants were awarded: 1) to a tenured or tenure-track professor ($5,000); 2) a Ph.D. candidate ($2,500); and 3) a language practitioner for the purpose of pedagogical research ($2,500). Dr. Ruey-Jiuan Regina Wu, at San Diego State University, will conduct a conversation-analytic study of the conceptualization of face in modern China and will explore its implications for business Chinese education. Margaret Gonglewski and Anna Helm, both professors at George Washington University, will explore the use of business cases in the foreign language classroom and identify best practices across disciplines. Pat McAloon, a graduate student at Ohio State University, will examine non-natives’ use of Chinese at work and evaluate advanced language use in China-related careers. |

Several CIBERs have agreed to join together in this new initiative, which will work to help “mainstream” business language into foreign language departments by introducing research awards and encouraging panel discussions at meetings such as the annual Modern Language Association conference, which typically do not stress utilitarian topics. The panels will present thoughtful discussion by respected academics from traditional language fields that are supportive of the need to encourage applied language teaching. |

The institute will build on the common ground between teachers and business people in our region and KU students. Many teachers would like to know more about African languages and culture in order to develop their teaching skills about Africa, while business people need this knowledge and language skills to facilitate their business dealings with and in Africa. The Institute will concentrate on the four African languages that are taught at KU, namely, Arabic, Swahili, Hausa, and Wolof. It will also focus on disciplines that will help understand dimensions of African culture such as ethnicity, religion, music, arts, and dance. The Institute will employ a multi-faceted approach to teaching that will include presentations, demonstrations, museum illustrations, and hands-on library research to better understand African language and culture. More than 20 KU Africanist faculty and guest speakers will participate in the program. |
