Inter-American Supply Chain Forum
March 15 - 16, 2012 - Florida International University

Improving performance through supply chain analytics across the Americas. Hosted by the Ryder Center for Supply Chain Management, Florida International University in Partnership with Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, March 15-16, 2012, College of Business Complex, Modesto Maidique Campus | Florida International University.

Trade in the Americas during the last years has increase dramatically, and Latin America is the fastest growing partner of the United States of America. Between 1998 and 2009, total U.S. merchandise trade (exports plus imports) with Latin America grew by 82% compared to 72% for Asia (driven largely by China), 51% for the European Union, 221% for Africa, and 64% for the world.

In addition, in today’s global volatile economy characterized by shrinking profit margins, forecast demand uncertainty, and inability to efficiently link SC planning, fulfillment activities, just in time operation, and customer demand, companies need to remain competitive through flexible SCM operations, increase responsiveness to the value chain, cost containment and reduction, improved productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Were They Taught or Did They Learn? A Framework for Investigating the Role and Effect(iveness) of Instruction in Second Language Learning
March 19, 2012 - Temple University

Presented by Dr. Alex Housen, University of Brussels, Belgium

Instruction has always been a key component of the language learning experience of most L2 learners but its role in the acquisition of a second or foreign language (L2) has been controversial ever since antiquity. Language teachers are often puzzled about the apparent discrepancy between what their students are taught, what they learn and (seem to) know, and what they can actually do in their L2.  But whatever their allegiance to a particular language teaching method, all language teachers will probably agree that some kind of instruction is necessary for successful L2 learning.

AIB Gurus Seminars
June 29, 2012 - Georgia State University

Though rapidly transforming economies, so-called Emerging Markets (EMs), have captured the attention of western businesses. Yet managers are often under informed and hold some misperceptions as to their nature and attractiveness. What do we know about potential business partners? What should we know about EM consumers and their expectations?  How large is middle class in each EM, and how can we measure it? How do various countries stack up in terms of the evolution of middle class? What do we know about the new entrepreneurial class in EMs? What are the arguments for city-based vs. country based marketing?  These and related issues make up a promising research avenue for scholars of international business. In this conversation, Professor Cavusgil will highlight meritorious research topics and offer suggestions for future investigations.

Location: Washington, D.C.
